Mambo Italiano… Torna L’Aventura!

L’aventura continues!

10 days 10 lbsThree years ago I took a life-changing trip to Italy. I blogged about it, and now that blog is becoming a book!

And I’m going back to the Bel Paese, back to the Boot, to get that ball of a book rolling!

That’s the short version…

6x9 frontThe long version is last time I tried to go to Italy, my friend Jenny broke her brain. And this time, my mom broke a bone.

Does that sound a bit hellish? Yeah, kind of. But Italy is heavenly. Here’s the foreword to the new book:

John Lennon nailed it. “Life is what happens when you’re making other plans.”

Dante also got it right when he said, “Noi non potemo avere perfetta vita senza amici.” We cannot have a perfect life without friends.

Dante and John Lennon. My relationship with Italy swings somewhere between Imagine and The Divine Comedy. The first time I went, with my family, we were robbed in Rome and had a Hellish time getting back on track. When we did, we discovered a Heavenly island where we swam nude in the clear Mediterranean, surrounded by Italy’s magic.

The trip you are about to take with me was equally Dantean. I could not have imagined, before I left, the particular versions of hell and the heaven the adventure would provide. But this quote by Sophia Loren puts a unique Italian spin on such experiences: “Se non hai mai pianto, i tuoi occhi non possono essere belli.” If you haven’t cried, your eyes can’t be beautiful.

This story is about my friend Jenny’s eyes. And the beauty my eyes saw—and how they cried!

Next month, god/ess willing, Jenny and I will be on “take two” of our trip together to Italy. If you are reading this, it means we successfully united in Milan, and are on our way to Florence. There, we will spend a week putting art in our eyes AND creating fresh art.

We will be writing a new story, and this time, together.

Isn’t that just LIFE?

coverAnd life cracks us open to new experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Here’s an excerpt from the last section of the new book, which is the TRUE story that inspired The Vesuvian Affair:

In the months after my trip and her surgery, Jenny and I joked about how, during her ordeal, I had been carrying a part of her soul within me. Specifically: her libido. Sex was the farthest thing from her mind, and the first thing on mine. There was no place for Vesuviette within the architecture of my life as I’d known it. I had to find an outlet for her explosive sexual longings and powers of desire.

Thank god I’m a writer!
